Observing the Moon in Iceland

Watching the moon from Iceland's lunar landscape

The Moon seen from Iceland
If you are interested in astronomy and observing the Moon, we recommend visiting Iceland in the winter. On a cold winter night in Iceland, you will get a stunning wiev of the moon and the stars in the dark night sky. Visiting some parts of Iceland may also give you the feel of being on the moon. In fact, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and many other NASA astronauts visited Iceland in the years before the manned Apollo missions to the moon, to study Icelandic geology and practice taking samples. They spent most of their time in and around Askja and lake Myvatn in the north of Iceland.
