Vestmannaeyjar islands

Vestmannaeyjar (Vestmann islands) are located just South of the mainland of Iceland. The islands are fifteen in total. Thereof, Heimaey is the largest one. It’s also the only island that’s still inhabited. The town Vestmannaeyjabær has been built around the fishing industry, but there are extremely good conditions for that business in Heimaey.

In the year of 1973, the people of Vestmannaeyjabær had to leave everything behind and flee the islands because of a volcanic eruption. Fortunately all of them survived the disaster, but you can still see clearly the traces of it. Close to Heimaey is Surtsey island, which was formed in a volcanic eruption in the year of 1963 and currently on UNESCO‘s list of international world heritage sites.

Vestmannaeyjar has a coulorful birdlife, especially when it comes to puffins that fly from one cliff to another.
